In aligning with the National Curriculum for England, we offer a broad and balanced set of subjects, allowing students to find success while exploring their passions and interests.

Key Stage 3

Year 7, 8 & 9

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to provide students in Years 7, 8, and 9 with a broad and balanced educational experience. Our students study a wide range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Computing, and Design Technology, which covers Resistant Materials, Food Technology, and Textiles. In addition, students explore the creative fields of Art, Drama, PE, and Music. In Year 9, students are introduced to Business Studies. Our comprehensive approach ensures our students receive a well-rounded education, preparing them for academic success and personal growth as they transition to the next stage of their learning journey.

Key Stage 4

Year 10 & 11

At GEMS FirstPoint School, Key Stage 4 marks the start of our students' GCSE journey. In Years 10 and 11, students continue to study the core subjects of English (Language and Literature), Mathematics, Science (either Triple or Combined), Arabic, and Islamic Studies. Alongside these, they choose three additional subjects from a broad range, including Economics, Media, and Psychology, to tailor their education to their interests and career aspirations. Each GCSE course lasts two years and culminates in examinations, with some subjects also requiring coursework and modular exams that contribute to the final grade. All GCSE exams are externally marked in the UK, using the 9-1 grading scale, where 9 is the highest and 4 is a pass. A grade 6 is considered a strong pass. This structure ensures that students are fully prepared for further education.

Wellbeing

At GEMS FirstPoint School, wellbeing is at the heart of our ethos. Our comprehensive wellbeing programme empowers students to understand and manage their own mental and emotional health, fostering resilience and self-awareness. Student leaders undergo specialised mental health training, enabling them to support their peers effectively and create a culture of care within the school.

Our dedicated staff ensure that wellbeing practices are seamlessly integrated throughout the school, with many certified in mental health first aid to provide expert guidance. We actively engage parents through workshops and initiatives, creating a strong partnership that supports every child’s wellbeing and success.

Academic Excellence

We pride ourselves on high quality teaching and academic excellence. Lessons highlight excellent communication and collaboration. Our learners are trained in metacognitive practices and are able to reflect on their individual learning journeys. Students drive learning at FPS and take part in Harkness student voice. This is entirely student led and allows for students to direct, steer and clarify discussions to best reflect their own ideas.

We also conduct student led enquiries through the Teaching & Learning Council. Here, students visit lessons to see how research proven pedagogies come alive in the classroom. They evaluate how this can develop further and feedback to senior leaders. Current areas of focus include oracy and metacognition. Our classrooms encapsulate high expectations and the pursuit of excellence for all.

Sports and Enrichment

Our Sports and Enrichment Programme at GEMS FirstPoint School offers a dynamic range of experiences designed to challenge and inspire all of our students. This programme goes beyond classroom learning, catering to diverse interests and fostering personal growth. Students can engage in various lunchtime and after-school activities, spanning academic, practical, and sporting pursuits.

Our comprehensive extra-curricular, sporting and intervention programmes are a cornerstone of our vision to ensure our students ‘Find Personal Success’, providing opportunities for students to develop skills, explore passions, and excel in a supportive and stimulating environment.

WHAT PROVISION IS MADE FOR MY CHILD TO EAT AT LUNCH TIME?

There are two dining rooms in school, one for KS3 and one for KS4/5 which can seat 536 students. Students have 50 minutes for lunch which gives all students plenty of time to get a hot meal.

While the weather is hot each year group has designated classrooms which they can use to eat packed lunches. Whilst queues exist, there is ample time for all students to purchase and eat food.

Students are able to purchase food at break time and lunch time.

WHY ARE STUDENTS REQUIRED TO CHANGE FOR PE AND WHY ARE THEY NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR THEIR PE KIT TO SCHOOL?

Students in Secondary School, until the Covid 19 Pandemic, were always required to change for PE – this is not a new policy and is established best practice in schools. Students are required to change for PE for a number of reasons:

  • When students are taking part in sport, they will likely become sweaty and odorous. For them to remain in these clothes for the rest of the day is unpleasant, both for the student, and for those around them. Allowing students to change into fresh clothes after their PE lessons, and to wash and spray themselves is very important.
  • Wearing uniform is part of a wider approach to improve learning as it supports the development of a positive school ethos and improvements in behaviour and discipline.
  • Some students choose to wear PE kit rather than uniform as an opportunity
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE FOR ASSESSMENT?
  • Prior to each assessment period, students will be given an assessment overview. In this overview it will explain the length of the assessment; the topics on the test, as well as resources to be used to prepare.
  • There will also be a link to the students’ subject Teams page, where you can find lesson resources and revision materials.
  • Time is built into lessons, the registration programme, assemblies and Core Enrichment (where applicable) to teach revision techniques and help students practice ahead of assessments.
HOW DO I KNOW HOW MY CHILD IS PROGRESSING IN SECONDARY?
  • There will be three assessment points throughout the school year. Following these assessments, you will receive a progress report for your child which will detail their progress in each subject as well as an attitude to learning and a home learning score.
  • There will be two parents’ evenings that will follow on from the data reports. These evenings, will give you an opportunity to arrange an appointment with each of your child’s teachers to discuss their progress. If you have any general enquiries regarding this you can contact your child’s form tutor or if there are any subject specific enquiries you are welcome to contact the subject specific staff.
HOW DO I SUPPORT MY CHILD WITH THEIR HOME LEARNING?
  • All homework will be recorded on Class Charts. Information relating to this app will be sent to parents. All students and parents will receive log in details. The platform can be used to track what Home Learning task each student has, the due date and any instructions that the teacher believes is relevant.
  • All students should also have access to Microsoft Teams. This may be used to upload additional resources that may be needed to complete the Home Learning tasks.
  • The Mathematics department use the Sparx platform for their Home Learning each week. This is a student and parent friendly platform that all students should now be able to access. If you have any queries about this, please do contact your child’s Mathematics teacher.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY CHILD IS STUDYING IN EACH CLASS?
  • A learning journey for each subject will be shared with parents which provides key details on the topics that your child will be studying in each subject.
  • Class resources are shared on Microsoft Teams should the students need to refer back to these.
  • Knowledge Organisers will include key content that students will be covering in lessons. These can be used to help student’s knowledge retrieval in class and at home.
